Boast In This

I whiffed it yesterday. My daughter asked me about the problems of this country and the mess we are leaving future generations. I explained what a scourge inflation can be and how it would likely become a real problem for us. Wise fiscal and monetary policy is a byproduct of something else. We are to boast in this:

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24

Boast In This?

What do we mean by “boast”? To boast is to speak with excessive pride. We can find plenty of that, can’t we! If we are brutally honest, we will soon realize that each of us are guilty of that. It’s not just politicians and fat-cat businessmen who boast. You and I do, too. To our shame.

What do I mean by to our shame? Look around. Our country is headed in the gutter and has been for a long time. We’re simply picking up speed. What once was taboo sexual sin is now mainstream. Abortion will likely become the law of the land. Smoking pot will soon be legalized everywhere. There is also lots of talk around the edges of legalizing prostitution. You watch. It’ll happen. First by lack of enforcement of current laws, then the eventual elimination of them altogether.

You and I are guilty of letting this happen, even if we aren’t directly participating in this behavior. It’s not only on the macro-level. Look at your own life. What do we boast in? Our own accomplishments.

Plenty of Warnings

You know what God said to the prophet Jeremiah? God said, “Therefore you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not obey you. You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you.”

We have plenty of warnings, but we refuse to listen. Why? Because you and I think we know what is best for us. We follow our own moral compass. Everyone does what is right in his own eyes. “I’m going to have sex with whom I want, when I want, and how I want. You can’t stop me.” Never mind the risks associated with that. None of that matters as long as I get a few moments of pleasure.

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
John 3:19-21

It’s not too late. Turn from your wicked ways. Boast in this: The Lord your God. As far as Inflation? That wouldn’t be a problem at all if we lived according to God’s design. Cell phones? They would be wonderful tools and not a scourge IF we honored God with how we used them.

Choose wisely.
