Last night we enjoyed a spectacular Mammatus cloud (think mammary). The sunset created a jaw-dropping color and gave it incredible depth. My mother asked me what I thought when I saw it. That was easy. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Psalm 19:1
It’s Plain to Us
The bible tells us that all of nature is evidence of who God is. In fact, nature is his most basic revelation. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that were made. (Romans 1:19-20)
Storm clouds like this are jaw-dropping proof that God is in charge.
Honestly, this is bad news for all of us. It’s good news in that God is kind, compassionate, and merciful in revealing himself. It’s bad new because mankind ignores him. Worse yet, we give all his credit to to things of our imagination.
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Romans 1:21-23
So They Are Without Excuse
That’s exactly what God says to us in the bible – his primary revelation to us. We are without excuse. While the heavens declare the glory of God, we became fools and worshipped anything BUT him. You, me, and every single human being on earth. Fools.
Two of God’s attributes are righteousness and justice. In fact, these two are the foundation of his throne. Foundation. (Psalm 9:7-8, 33:5, 89:14, 91:2; Isaiah 28:17; Jeremiah 9:24, for just a few examples) But what does this mean? It means that God is in charge and you aren’t and that your actions need to prove you agree.
Here’s God’s view on this. You know the rules, yet you blatantly disregard them. Therefore, judgment is on your head. In fact, that judgment is eternal and has already begun. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” (Romans 1:18)
What does that mean? It means that God gives us over to our own filthy lusts. Just look around at the world today. It’s chaos. Why? Because mankind is so wicked. So is your own personal life, if you are honest. And this is just the beginning. The end is the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:10, 14-15)
The Heavens Declare! There Is Hope!
Indeed the heavens declare the glory of God, and the bible tells us to repent and call on the name of the Lord. Jesus is his name.
