You’ll have to take my word on this, but I’m not as young as I used to be. I forget things. If I’m made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26), does that mean God ages, too? Does God forget?
We won’t get far to explain all that here today. Suffice it to say that God always is. He never was not. He always will be. He’s like us. We had a beginning – sometimes before the creation (Ephesians 1:4). On the other hand, none of us will have an end. Sure, we will die, but our spirit lives on. Furthermore, one day our bodies will rise from the dead and reunite with our spirit. (Revelation 21:1-8, 20:7-15)
Laugh all you want about that, but someday you’ll realize this is true. May that not be too late! For there will come a day of judgment. “And just as it is appointed for man to die one, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)
Does God Forget?
Back to the question at hand. Does God forget? No, he doesn’t. He remembers everything. He knows everything, even the things done in secret. Even these will be laid out before us at our judgment. There is no hiding from God.
However, there is one thing he does forget – your sin – but only under special circumstances. You must repent. Not of one sin but of all of them. You must turn from your life of sin (which God will make clear) and turn to him. You must walk away from the old you and become born again as a new creation. God will change you, but not unless you are willing to abandon it all.
Does that mean God will change our basic personality? No. If you are a humorous person, you will still be funny. You won’t enjoy inappropriate jokes anymore, but you will still enjoy laughter. Believe it or not, clean jokes are more fun than sarcastic humor that tears people down. Trust me, born-agains know how to laugh!
No Small Issue.
This is no small issue because unless you are forgiven, you will not enter heaven. Period. If you are, then not one single sin will be charged against you. Check this out:
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103:11-14
Does God forget? Yes, some things.
Folks, God takes all this seriously. God himself, came to earth in bodily form in Jesus Christ, paid for our sin by dying on the cross. He conquered death by rising from the dead, just as he said he would. One day, he will return to judge the living and the dead. To those who believe and have faith in Jesus, he will give eternal life. To those to refuse to believe, eternal destruction in the lake of fire.
The big question is, do you believe? You’ve heard the gospel. What is your answer?
