Summer Solstice

This is my favorite time of year. The sun rises early and sets late – well after 9:00 p.m. in my part of the world. There is something about light that lifts my spirit. I also enjoy the darkness of winter. But, I must really enjoy the light much more because there is something about the summer solstice that signals an unwelcome change. Winter will soon be here.

I’m probably not alone. I desire this part of the season to be longer and wish the winter to be shorter. There is no changing that unless I am willing to change my latitude. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve considered that. The fact of the matter is that the summer solstice is the beginning of the days getting increasingly shorter, and there is nothing I can do about it.

I mentioned this to my siblings in a group chat. My sister told me to cheer up and realize this is the first day of summer! She’s right. Attitude is important. I guess it’s not so much that I don’t like winter; it’s that I really enjoy the long days at this time of year. Building up to it (April and May) is full of anticipation for warm evenings outside wearing shorts and a t-shirt. There’s just something really nice about that.

Anticipation for My Real Home

All this reminds me of my true home. As nice as it is here, Central Minnesota isn’t my permanent address. My true home is with Jesus. That is were my heart should be. Are the days getting shorter? Yes, they are, but rejoice in them and realize that I am one day closer to being with Jesus. In heaven, there will be no sun or moon because the glory of God will be our light (Revelation 21:23).

Here’s the other thing. Whether the days are getting longer or shorter, sin is a major problem here on earth. It’s a major problem within this body of mine, too. In heaven, it won’t. In fact, there won’t be any sin – at all! As in none. I don’t know about you, but that sounds very good to me. Can you even imagine that? Well, it’s not just wishful thinking. One day, those of us who are born again will enjoy a SIN-FREE city for all of eternity!

Another thing we’ll enjoy is our resurrected bodies! No more disease. No more death. We’ll have the bodies that God intended at Creation. We will be free of sin and decay. Completely. Forever.

Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
1 John 3:2

Make the Best Use of the Time

Therefore, I must be careful how I think. It’s easy for me to get negative about the summer solstice. I need to keep things in perspective. I’m reminded of another verse:

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15-16

How can I make the best use of the time? How about sharing the gospel with someone? That’s the best news the world has EVER heard! Why not share it today?

In case you are wondering what I write about during the WINTER solstice, check out this old post of mine.

Father, I really look forward to the day when I will be in your presence. Yes, you are with me now, but how splendid will that be when you welcome me into your rest! Amen.
