Lately, I’ve written about Critical Race Theory (“CRT”). As with many “cultural” issues, the church is often late to the party. CRT is already in our schools, yet most of us have never heard of it. In his new book, “Fault Lines“, Voddie Baucham, Jr. warns of this false religion becoming a big problem in the evangelical church as many pastors, even well-known pastors, embrace this new ideology. I’m starting to think it’s a good thing, a cleansing of the church.
Why do I say that? Let’s not kid ourselves. Certainly, the bible is clear that we may know whether we are indeed saved or not (1 John 5:12). Furthermore, the bible is clear that we are to test ourselves to make sure that we are indeed saved. “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
Do we do this?
The Homosexuality Craze
I remember when homosexuality was the big topic in our churches. The Episcopalians jumped on this bandwagon right away. Sure, there were many who fought it, and some congregations even split. It wasn’t long, however, before the denomination had its way and homosexuality was openly embraced. The same was true for the ELCA. The Methodists are in the last throes of its long and agonizing death. On the other hand, some denominations firmly planted a flag condemning the practice and called it what it is, sin, as they should.
At the time, I thought this was a great scourge of the church. I saw so many people abandoning the clear instruction of scripture to embrace what they felt was “the right thing.” Certainly, Satan was clever in deceiving so many! Clever, yes. Deceitful, yes. Yet God uses even these for his own glory. How so? By cleansing of the church.
Matthew 25 speaks of the day that Jesus will make the final judgment. He will separate the sheep from the goats with the sheep going to his kingdom and the goats to eternal fire. Even today, Jesus is separating the sheep from the goats. If we look closely, we can see it happening right before our eyes. The homosexuality craze? This was separating the sheep from the goats. It was cleansing of the church.
A Reason to Rejoice!
Certainly, CRT is today’s cleansing of the church. It hit me as such last week during a bible study. We were bemoaning the terrible direction this world and the church were headed. Suddenly, I realized this was a GOOD thing! Here’s two verses stand on:
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” 2 Corinthians 5:13
Jesus is in full control of his bride. The church is not being destroyed. Hardly! In fact, it’s being built up! Jesus is cleansing the church.
Holy and Without Blemish
Finally, let’s leave with one final passage.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:25-27
Jesus is using Satan’s CRT to wash us with the word. Why? So that he might present the church to himself in splendor…without spot or wrinkle or any such thing…that she might be holy and without blemish.
What Satan means for evil, God is using in the cleansing of the church! I don’t know about you, but I want that! Isn’t that something we can get excited about? I should think so!
Father, I thank you for the cleansing. It is difficult seeing some we thought were believers getting swept away by heresy, but, without washing, we cannot be clean. So be it! Let there also be great repentance! Thank you! Amen!
