Not Of This World.

Who among us isn’t trying to make sense of our country right now? I have bible verses rattling around my head like crazy this morning. Let me share some with you and what they mean to me today.

John 17:1-19 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

2 Timothy 2:1-4 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.

2 Corinthians 5:20 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Luke 12:41-44 41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

I am not of this world. Period. My home is where Jesus is, and one day, soon, he will return for me. Until that time, I am to do what he instructs me to do and nothing else. I am an ambassador in Christ, charged with reconciling people to God and making disciples for those who believe. I am to focus on my mission and not get entangled in the affairs of this world.

Romans 1:28-32 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Revelation 22:10-11 10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”

That’s the state of the world. God has given it over to its own sin. This country (and the entire world) is corrupt. It is evil. Apart from divine intervention, that won’t change. It returns to its vomit. It becomes more and more and more evil. That’s the world. That’s your loved ones, your neighbors, your elected representatives. Are you going to trust any of them to do what’s right according to God’s commands? Don’t be a fool. It won’t happen.

 Daniel 2:21 21 He changes times and seasons;
    he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise
    and knowledge to those who have understanding;

Psalm 146:3-4 Put not your trust in princes,
    in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
    on that very day his plans perish.

1 Peter 2:13-17 13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

The cold, hard fact is that God is one who puts ALL presidents into office. Was it a rigged vote that elected Biden? Perhaps but only because it was God who appointed him. As awful the idea is of Biden being our President, it was God who put him there – not to sin but to rule by the authority granted him by God. Same goes with all of government. Like it or not, God puts evil people in power, and they do evil things.

Before you get smug and think that Biden and the Democratic Party have the only edge on evil, let’s compare one simple thing. Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver found himself on the frying pan for ending a prayer, “A-man and A-woman.” What got lost in all this was that he prayed it “in the name of the monotheistic god and the god known by many names and many faiths.” Total blaspheme. I agree that it’s outrageous. But, what’s equally outrageous is that the Republican Party once nominated Mitt Romney to run for president. He’s a Mormon. Does either of these two politicians profess truth about Jesus? Nope. Hypocrites.

Luke 11:29-32 29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

Deuteronomy 18:20-22 20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

Yeah, and to all the prophets who spoke in the name of God that Donald Trump would be re-elected. How gullible are Christians when we listen to these prophets! Ok, Biden hasn’t been sworn in, and Trump could possibly run and win again in four years. So, it is possible for that prophecy to yet come true. However, my guess is these same prophets have LOTS of other prophecy that has been flat-out proven wrong. And the church doesn’t seem to mind that at all. Why? Because they have put their hope on a political candidate. Can you see discipline coming? I can. We need to deal with false prophets in our midst.

 It seems Christians had two major concerns with this election. Abortion and freedom of religion. Maybe it’s time to quit trusting in princes and turn our hearts solely to God. Let’s also keep in mind that God may just let things get much, much worse in the United States. Isn’t it evident that “God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done”? Let’s stop making excuses for Donald Trump and everything else. Be prepared for the day of unrestricted abortion and that you will have to hide in your home to worship. Persecution may be a reality sooner than later. Get used to that idea. Jesus warned us.

My king is in heaven. That’s my authority. Yes, I will honor Joe Biden as President. It won’t be easy, but God has instructed me to do it. I will keep focused on my duties as defined by God. It will be very easy to be distracted by the chaos going on all around me, but I must be determined. God will provide all that I need. Psalm 91.

Besides, what am I going to focus on, the chaos and coming persecution or the salvation God is offering to all people.

Isaiah 55:1 “Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.

Father, I ask you to divert my attention away from the world and to yours. That’s really where I need to focus. Amen.
