“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish
but have eternal life.”
John 3:16
I like Valentine’s Day. Some may think it’s a day for Hallmark and flower shops to rake in the bucks, and it is. However, it can be so much more than that, depending upon what you make of it. The way I look at it, we really have no reason NOT to set aside a day to specially celebrate our love for each other.
For some, money is tight. No worries. There are lots of things to do that you don’t have to spend a dime. Have you ever heard “Why Don’t We Just Dance” by Josh Turner? Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH1Z9DEDqpk
Maybe you have a couple extra bucks. Try this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nADTbWQof7Y
Don’t forget your kids and your parents. Would it hurt to love on them extra today? No, but don’t take them to dinner with you and your spouse. This is her special day. For lovers.
Maybe your spouse doesn’t go for all this stuff. Then I say it’s time to crack that hard shell and get it going. Do your best to encourage something special today, whatever it may be, but don’t get disappointed and hurt if things don’t turn out the way you want it to. Give it a couple of days and talk about it. Tell him that you want to celebrate your love for each other. Simple as that. Whatever you do, don’t argue or turn it into a conflict. Love is patient, remember?
What if you have wounds from the past? I don’t want to seem uncaring but get over it! Settle these issues – soon! Get professional help if need be but resolve the issue as best as you can so you can relish and enjoy the gift of love that our Lord has given us. Will it be perfect? No, but any celebration is better than a cold, icky blanket full of past hurts.
What if you don’t have a spouse or a significant other? Hey, why not help someone else celebrate? Give a co-worker a few bucks so she can take her husband out tonight. Maybe volunteer to watch someone’s kids so they can. I’m sure you can figure something out if you try. Oh, and don’t fall for Satan’s trap and feel sorry for yourself if you don’t have someone. He will be thrilled to find you moping around with tears on your cheek. God has a much better plan for you. Immerse yourself in his love. And what is love except to be shared. Even for singles.
Did I leave anyone out? If I did, you still have no reason to miss out on this day. Make it special!
John 15:12-17 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servant, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
See how important all this love stuff is? Go and have some fun with it!
Father what wisdom you have in making special days to celebrate! Thank you! Amen.
