Good Afternoon!

There’s a buzz in the air as kids are counting down the days until summer vacation. It suddenly seems possible that school is almost over. That reminds me of a verse that “clicked” for me last week. Isn’t it wonderful how the Lord will keep certain verses hidden until one moment it suddenly makes sense? You look back and can’t imagine how you didn’t see it before.

It’s gifts like this that keep the bible forever fresh. There is no danger of running out of new material. In fact, the more we try to exhaust this resource, the deeper and richer the mine becomes. There’s nothing like it on earth. It’s infinity. That’s how God calls himself, “I Am.” Such a strange name. Add infinity and suddenly it starts making sense.

But that’s not my verse. This one is:

Mark 11:23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

Really? Let’s think about this for a minute. Did Moses turn his staff into a snake? Or, was it God? Moses was just the vehicle to perform a miracle, right? I doubt if he could have performed that trick around the campfire at night. I’ll bet he wouldn’t try if the whole nation begged him to entertain them. My guess is that it frightened him so that he only did it when God told him to.

And that’s the key right there. Do you suppose for a moment that God would give me free reign to thrown mountains around? Let’s put it this way. Would you trust your child with that kind of ability? Heck no! I’m telling you right now, I doubt if I’m trustworthy enough about that mountain thing. Seriously. Could you imagine everything you would need to do first, even if you could throw a mountain? First, you’d have to get permits. Then, you’d need to evacuate everyone anywhere close. I’m sure there will be insurance requirements. Who’s going to pay for that?

No, this mountain business has to be left to God.

What if he gave me the honor to “pull the cord” when He decided it was time for it to move. Do you suppose it would move at my command? Absolutely. But, it really wouldn’t be my command, it would be God’s.

Just like Moses and his staff.

Father, I believe. Simple as that. Amen.
